So you have been here forty years? How does one thousand seven hundred years sound? That is ROUGHLY how long ago the ROMANS lived in Great Eversden. The books say it isn't so, but now we know it is.

"Veni , vidi, I settled in Great Eversden"!

This is the second year that The Cambridge Archaeological Field Group have been digging in a field in Great Eversden. Last year revealed little, but this year is different. There is enough evidence to suggest that a substantial villa once presided over the western end of the village.

History

Field Officer Michael Coles and Site Director Terry Dymott have unearthed masses of building materials suggesting a roofed dwelling with under-floor heating and tiled floors on stone foundations. This was a person of substance.

There is no metal at the site. Today there is nothing to see. The site is now filled in and cultivated ready for Winter wheat. This time next year the team will be back to make further investigations.

The site was chosen because a routine "walk" along and over the chalk ridge yielded many floor tesserae and pottery fragments. A geophysical survey threw up magnetic anomalies suggesting possible buildings. The trials are very encouraging.
