At the end of 2007, David, Simon & I decided that we needed to 'do something different' down on the farm!  After browsing through several farming magazines, I came across an article on 'worm farming'.  So off we went to Brecon in South Wales for a couple of days to learn all about it.  Brian, a very cheerful & chatty Welshman, passed on his enthusiasm despite the wet conditions on his farm.  We came home to think about it and in March 2008 decided that we would 'give it a go'!
Many of you from the village will have seen the 'beds' being made in the redundant pig meadow over the past couple of weeks.  There are 4 in total, measuring 5 x 50 metres each, filled with horse manure from Newmarket. (Nothing but the best for our worms!!)
We are now awaiting delivery of half a million worms!!  Brian will be bringing these, along with the sheets to cover the beds.
It will take a year for the worms to grow & reproduce before we can start 'harvesting' them.  All we need to do is feed and water them!!
Then........ next April we will start collecting them each month to be sold back to Brian for two main purposes.  Firstly, for the fishing industry, and secondly & more importantly, for Brian's 'digester' invention.  This consists of metal bins sold to anyone with large amounts of waste food.  The food is placed in the bins with the worms, who eat their way though the vast quantities and produce 'worm cast' that can then be used as fertiliser.  A very green invention.
If anyone wants to find out more about the process, do feel free to stop & chat if you see us in the field.

Of course, there always has to be one objector to any new venture........  (see below)
