Spring arrives in The Eversdens                                                                     Scene Index
20th March to 4th April 2011    How the seasons vary! I notice the forsythia and daffodils were at their best in the middle of April last year (click). This year they are already fading (4th April). In 2010 the blackthorn was still widespread in May. Almost every year someone tells me the blossom is "especially good this year"- usually with a plausible explanation. I haven't yet seen David Ellis's rainfall figures for this year (last year's) but nationally, and particularly here in the East, this has been almost the driest March on record. Just 19 millimetres in Lincolnshire. It was sunny, too, but barely warmer than average. These conditions must suit the old Eversden Gages which are in full flower. The new orchard is sprouting nicely but has needed watering.  DF
