Letters to the
Editor/ReadersDear Sir
Applications for consideration of permitted development involving the provision of still more telephone masts, ostensibly to improve reception and increase
mobile phone usage ,prompts me to ask, “Since when has reception been poor”, "Haven' we got enough mobile phones already?"Despite the illegalities, car drivers are frequently observed endangering themselves and other road users as they steer with one hand and hold a mobile phone to their ear with the other.
A job creation scheme enabling unemployed photographers , mobile ones naturally, to record these offenders on film at roundabouts and traffic lights would undoubtedly prove a lucrative assignment and do far more good than extra masts.
On public transport it is difficult to refrain from bidding farewell to the usual crop of George’s, Harry’s, Tracey’s and Diana’s and of course Mr Smith, their fellow travellers having had no option but to listen to them whiling away their travelling time discussing their business problems, gossiping or just pouring their grievances into their mobiles.
Someone is receiving them loud and clear.
Travellers in far off lands see shepherds up in the mountains with crook in one hand and phone in the other.Do they also receive E mails and surf the net on their mobiles?
There is no need to travel, just walk down the street at any time of the day and count the number of people walking along ,talking into their mobiles , unaware of what is happening around them.
Finally the classic one as witnessed by myself at a wedding in our village church.
“We will begin with a moments silence” said our reverend gentleman. The silence was punctuated by a ringing phone. ”We will have to start all over again “,he said, “the bridegroom has forgotten to switch off his mobile phone”
Give a firm no to more telephone masts, reception is already more than adequate here in the Eversdens thank you.
Jill Marshall,
