St Helen's  Saturday 14th June 2008

Clive Dalton writes:

The two pictures are of the scene outside St Helen's on Saturday when this year's 6-Bell striking competition of the Ely Diocesan Association of Church Bell Ringers Cambridge Area was going on inside. Ten bands turned up of which the home band was one.

This was the first time we had entertained and it is thought that our new set of bells attracted the large number of visitors keen to try them out. There was some very impressive ringing not least by an ad hoc group who gathered to ring before the competition started. It is a great pleasure to hear it being done really well.

Apart from inviting the use of our bells, we provided tea, sandwiches and cakes at the end. "We" meaning Judith and Felicity Webster, Jean Boyd, Betty Mallows and Barbara Sach.

Another milestone was also passed on Sunday when the band gathered to ring for Morning Service for the first time. Thus was revived a tradition which must have ceased towards the end of the 19th century having endured for over two centuries before that.
