The New Village Orchard   6th February 2011                                           Click for Eversden Events Index

History was made on this day. The last of the great orchards around The Eversdens was grubbed out around 50 years ago. On this day a new Village Orchard was planted. (Click for list.) These pictures show the band of volunteers receiving instruction and getting stuck into the work. It will be a while before you can pick your own apples, pears, and plums (including the famous Eversden Gage) but it will be wonderful watching the orchard mature. (See reprint from Tail Corn - Winter 2010)
It was good to see families out making a mark on the landscape. It was a blustery day. A fallen tree in Harlton Road cut off electricity to much of the area but not soon enough to prevent a welcome coffee-break for the workers. Paul and Margaret Tebbit wish to thank all who turned up to be part of this historic day. (DF)
