| The Nick Clemmow Weathercock restored
28th November 2008
Back to Eversden Events Pictured There was a special moment for the village and the Clemmow family on Friday morning 28th November 2008. The weathercock was first placed on St Mary's spire in memory of Nicholas Clemmow who died in 1986 aged 32. Joan and Phillip Clemmow have had the weathercock completely refurbished. It has been reconstructed in copper and faced with gold leaf. It will shine from the spire for many years. Joan Clemmow and Nick's sister, Lindy, went to watch the hoisting and placing of the weathercock. Sue Macdonald joined the group. Sue's late husband, Patrick, was churchwarden of St Mary's and it was his great joy to know that the tower was to be restored. Maurice Avery invited Joan to say a few words before he and his son, Jamie, saw the weathervane hoisted to the parapet. Lindy scaled the ladders and watched as Mo and Jamie threaded the weathervane through the hole in the temporary roof and slotted it into place on the spire. When the scaffolding is removed (before Christmas) the weathercock will be seen atop the fully-restored tower shining out over the village. Thanks to Peter Delderfield and the team from Baker's of Danbury for a job well done. (Ed.) |
